Synopsis: In rococco Paris of the 1760's rich and bored aristocrats play high stakes games of passion, seduction, and betrayal. The Marquise de Merteuil (Close) enlists the aid of a former lover, the Vicomte de Valmont (Malkovich), to despoil the young Cecile de Volanges (Thurman) before her wedding day because Merteuil bears a grudge against Cecile's mother.

Valmont, for his part, wishes to seduce the honorable Madame de Tourvel (Pfeiffer) and is told by Merteuil that if he succeeds she will give him a "reward". The electric action that follows explores the depths of human betrayal, sacrifice, and love.
