Reviews: Internet Movie Database
Synopsis: Covering all the main elements of her early reign, although not as historically accurate as it could be, this period film portrays the precarious position that Queen Elizabeth found herself in before and immediately after her ascension to the throne of England in 1558.
Cate Blanchett plays a superb Elizabeth who is dogged on all sides by contradictory advisors, foreign foes and assassination plots, all while carrying on a touch and go romance with Robert Dudley, the Earl of Leicester, played by Joseph Fiennes. The movie's ambience is at times dark and sinister while the events and action of the film are often confusing, but this lends itself well to the complicated nature of Elizabeth's early years as queen.
