Writer: Henry James (novel), Laura Jones (screenplay)

Cast: Nicole Kidman, John Malkovich, Barbara Hershey, Viggo Mortensen, Christian Bale, Richard Grant, John Gielgud

Synopsis: From the well-known period director Jane Campion comes this literary film adaptation of Henry James' classic novel about an American woman who seeks out relatives in England after her parents die. Their death has rendered her penniless, but her beauty wins her many ardent admirers, one of whom secures her a fortune from his dying father.

Now, as an independent woman she tours Europe, meeting another American expatriate whom she then marries. However, it isn't long before she begins to loathe her new husband and desperately seeks a way out of the union. Malkovich's performance is, as always, transfixing while Kidman's rare appearance in period costume is a feast for the eyes.
